Toubkal the roof of the atlas

The Marquis de Segonzac accompanied by Vincent Berger and Hubert Dolbeau climbed for the first time in 1923 the Toubkal, thus dethroning the "Jbel Ayachi" (3 747 m) previously considered as the highest peak in Morocco.

A low technical climb

At its summit, Mount Toubkal has a lot of "Cairn" (artificial clusters of stones) originally built by the Berbers for whom Toubkal is a holy place dedicated to Sidi Chamarouch, a marabout whose grave is located near White rock in the village that bears his name at 2310 m stage, towards the refuge Neltner and the Toubkal, a place of worship frequented mainly by Berber women and whose entry is prohibited to non-Muslims.

Thus the roof of Africa welcomes every year many lovers and lovers of Trekking. An ascent which does not present great technical difficulties and which is often facilitated by the help and assistance of many muleteers.

A region of high mountain tourism and trekking

Summer is the most favorable season for the climbing of the Jbel Toubkal. From the road the last accessible village and two days walk from Toubkal is Imlil, the "Chamonix" Moroccan. It is located in the valley of Asni.
