Zagora - From the Drâa valley to the erg Chegaga
The City of Zagora:
In the south-east of the kingdom, on the middle course of Draâ, is situated the province of Zagora. It covers an area of 23,000 km². Zagroa is located at 170Km more south of the city Ouarzazate. With its strategic position, Zagora is the main city before the great Moroccan desert.
History of the city of Zagora:
The history of the Zagora region dates back to time immemorial, as evidenced by rock carvings at Foum Chena and Tazarine and the giant necropolis of Foum Larjane at lghir N'tidri at M'hamid El Ghizlane. At the beginning of the 14th century, the Saordian Chorfas, from the Middle East settled in Tagmadart.
In the 16th century, the Saâdian Chorfas set out to conquer the SousMaroc and the North of Morocco, before realizing that of the country of Western Sudan by the famous road of Timbuktu. This great expedition ensured the commercial and cultural prosperity of Morocco.
During the reign of the Alawite dynasty, the region was given special interest since its liberation by the great Sultan My Mohamed ben cherif in the 17th century and especially during the reign of the great and famous My Ismail. His son Cherif Ben Ismail went to Aghlan of Beni Zoli, where he installed the seat of his authority (wilaya of Draa Sijilmassa). The Zagora area is crossed by the Jbel Bani, an Ordovician line that forms the western boundary of the Tazarine basin and bypasses the Tamegroute area towards Foum-Zguid.
The valley of the Middle Draa stretches over 26,000 hectares, a strange oasis of strange greenery in this pre-Saharan environment. Its cultivation depends largely on the input of water from the outside.
